What scans, tests, and appointments you need — and when — throughout your pregnancy
Your first antenatal visit at Mother Hospitals is a comprehensive consultation designed to establish a complete picture of your health, your pregnancy, and any risk factors that need monitoring. It is best done as soon as you confirm a positive pregnancy test — ideally before 10 weeks.
Dr. E. Prashanthi Reddy takes time at this visit to understand your full obstetric and medical history, explain what lies ahead in each trimester, and answer all your questions — so you leave feeling informed and supported, not overwhelmed.
Eat a variety of foods — whole grains, proteins (eggs, lentils, lean meat, dairy), iron-rich foods (green leafy vegetables, legumes), calcium, and healthy fats. Avoid raw meat, unpasteurised dairy, and high-mercury fish.
Folic acid (from preconception to 12 weeks), iron (from 14 weeks), calcium + Vitamin D (second trimester onwards), and DHA. Dr. Prashanthi tailors your supplement plan to your blood test results.
30 minutes of moderate exercise (walking, prenatal yoga, swimming) on most days is safe and beneficial. Strengthens muscles for labour, improves mood, and reduces gestational diabetes risk.
Aim for 8 hours of sleep. From 20 weeks, sleeping on your left side improves blood flow to the baby. Short rest periods during the day are encouraged, especially in the third trimester.
Alcohol (no safe level in pregnancy), smoking, raw or undercooked foods, heavy lifting, high-impact contact sports, and prolonged exposure to heat (hot baths, saunas). Limit caffeine to under 200 mg per day.
Pregnancy anxiety is common and normal. Talk to Dr. Prashanthi about concerns at any visit. Our team is also available on WhatsApp for between-visit questions that cannot wait.
Gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) is one of the most common pregnancy complications, affecting approximately 1 in 6 pregnancies in India. It occurs when blood sugar levels rise above normal during pregnancy — most often between 24 and 28 weeks — because pregnancy hormones interfere with how insulin works.
The good news: with the right management, most women with GDM deliver healthy babies. At Mother Hospitals, every pregnant woman is screened for GDM and those diagnosed receive a personalised, proactive management plan.
An oral glucose tolerance test (OGTT) is performed at 24–28 weeks. You fast overnight, drink a 75 g glucose solution, and blood sugar is measured at fasting, 1 hour, and 2 hours. GDM is diagnosed if any of the readings exceed the threshold values (fasting ≥92, 1-hour ≥180, or 2-hour ≥153 mg/dL by IADPSG criteria).
Not all pregnancies are straightforward. At Mother Hospitals, Dr. E. Prashanthi Reddy provides specialist monitoring for any pregnancy where the mother or baby faces elevated risk. This includes more frequent scans, specialist consultations, and a proactive approach to preventing complications before they escalate.
Comprehensive specialist care for all high-risk conditions — gestational diabetes, preeclampsia, twin pregnancy, IVF pregnancies, and advanced maternal age.
Blood pressure checks, urine protein testing, kidney and liver function review, and Doppler scanning to detect and manage preeclampsia early.
Specialised scan protocols every 2–3 weeks from 16 weeks for all twin pregnancies, with close monitoring for growth discordance and twin-to-twin transfusion.
Umbilical artery and middle cerebral artery Doppler scans to assess placental blood flow and fetal wellbeing in growth-restricted or high-risk pregnancies.
Electronic fetal heart rate monitoring to assess fetal wellbeing in the third trimester — especially important for post-dates, IUGR, and gestational diabetes.
Thyroid function (TSH, T3, T4) monitored at booking and each trimester. Dosage adjustments made promptly to protect fetal brain development.

As soon as you confirm a positive pregnancy test — ideally before 10 weeks. Early booking allows accurate dating, first-trimester risk screening (NT scan, blood tests), folic acid guidance, and early detection of ectopic pregnancy or miscarriage risk. At Mother Hospitals, first antenatal appointments are available from 6 weeks of pregnancy.
For a low-risk pregnancy, approximately 8–10 visits from confirmation to delivery: first consultation (6–10 weeks), NT scan visit (11–14 weeks), anomaly scan visit (18–20 weeks), GDM test visit (24–28 weeks), third-trimester growth scan visits (28, 32, 36 weeks), birth plan consultation (32 weeks), and final pre-delivery visits at 38–40 weeks. High-risk pregnancies require more frequent monitoring and will have a personalised schedule.
Standard scans include: dating scan (6–8 weeks), NT scan (11–14 weeks) for chromosomal screening, anomaly scan (18–20 weeks) for detailed fetal anatomy, growth scans (28, 32, 36 weeks) and Doppler studies if indicated. All these scans are available in-house at Mother Hospitals with expert reporting by Dr. E. Prashanthi Reddy.
Gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) is blood sugar that rises above normal during pregnancy, typically diagnosed at 24–28 weeks via the oral glucose tolerance test (OGTT). All pregnant women at Mother Hospitals are screened. Those diagnosed receive a personalised diet plan, blood glucose monitoring guidance, and medication (tablets or insulin) when diet alone is insufficient. Serial growth scans monitor the baby's weight. Most women with well-managed GDM deliver healthy babies at term.
Standard recommendations include folic acid (ideally started before conception and continued through 12 weeks — prevents neural tube defects), iron (from ~14 weeks to prevent anaemia), calcium and Vitamin D (for fetal bone development), and DHA/omega-3 (supports fetal brain development). Dr. E. Prashanthi Reddy reviews your booking blood tests and personalises your supplement plan at your first visit.
Yes — for most women, regular moderate exercise is safe and beneficial throughout pregnancy. Recommended activities include 30 minutes of walking most days, prenatal yoga, swimming, and pelvic floor exercises. High-impact exercise, heavy lifting, contact sports, and lying flat on your back (from the second trimester) should be avoided. Dr. Prashanthi Reddy will advise on exercise based on your health and any complications.
A high-risk pregnancy is one where the mother or baby has an elevated risk of complications. Common causes include gestational diabetes, preeclampsia, twin pregnancy, advanced maternal age (35+), IVF conception, thyroid disorders, and previous caesarean. At Mother Hospitals, high-risk pregnancies receive more frequent antenatal visits, specialist scans, Doppler studies, and a personalised birth plan. Visit our High-Risk Pregnancy page for full details.
Your estimated due date (EDD) is calculated from the first day of your last menstrual period (LMP) — add 280 days (40 weeks). This is confirmed and refined by your dating ultrasound at 6–10 weeks, which measures the baby's crown-rump length (CRL) to give a more accurate date. Dr. E. Prashanthi Reddy confirms your EDD at your very first antenatal visit.
