What is IVF?
In Vitro Fertilisation — Simply Explained

IVF (In Vitro Fertilisation) means fertilising an egg with sperm outside the body — in a laboratory — and transferring the resulting embryo into the uterus. It is the most effective fertility treatment available, with over 8 million babies born worldwide since 1978.

Quick Answer

What is IVF and how does it work?

IVF (In Vitro Fertilisation) is a fertility treatment where eggs are collected from the ovaries, fertilised with sperm in a laboratory, and the resulting embryos are transferred into the uterus. The process takes 4–6 weeks per cycle. Key steps: ovarian stimulation (10–14 days) → egg retrieval (1 day, under sedation) → fertilisation in the lab (Day 0–1) → embryo culture (Day 3–5) → embryo transfer (1 day) → pregnancy test (14 days later). At Mother Hospitals, Boduppal, Dr. E. Prashanthi Reddy leads every step personally. Call 97059 93366.

What We Offer

💉 Step 1: Ovarian Stimulation

Daily FSH injections (or Needleless IVF protocol) for 10–14 days stimulate multiple follicles to grow. Progress monitored with ultrasound and blood tests every 2–3 days. Trigger injection given when follicles are 18–20 mm.

🥚 Step 2: Egg Retrieval (OPU)

Eggs collected transvaginally under sedation — painless, takes 15–20 minutes. Typically 8–15 eggs retrieved depending on AMH and protocol response. Same-day discharge.

🔬 Step 3: Fertilisation in the Lab

Eggs fertilised with partner's sperm via ICSI (single sperm injected directly into each egg). Fertilisation confirmed the next morning. Embryos cultured to Day 3 (cleavage) or Day 5 (blastocyst).

🌱 Step 4: Embryo Transfer

1–2 embryos placed into the uterus via a thin catheter — painless, no anaesthesia, takes 5 minutes. Remaining embryos frozen for future FET cycles.

⏳ Step 5: The Two-Week Wait

Progesterone support given for 2 weeks. Blood pregnancy test (beta-hCG) done 14 days after transfer. A positive result confirms implantation.

❄️ Freeze-All & FET Strategy

In many cases, all embryos are frozen after egg collection (freeze-all), and transfer is done in a separate FET cycle when the uterine environment is optimal. Often gives better results than fresh transfer.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long does one IVF cycle take?
One complete IVF cycle takes 4–6 weeks from first injection to pregnancy test result. Breakdown: Day 1–14: ovarian stimulation. Day 14–15: egg retrieval. Day 15–20: embryo culture in lab. Day 20: embryo transfer (or freeze). Day 34: pregnancy test. Some cycles use a freeze-all strategy where transfer happens in a separate month.
What is the success rate of IVF in Hyderabad?
At Mother Hospitals, IVF success rates per embryo transfer: under 35: 50–65%. Age 35–38: 35–45%. Age 38–40: 25–35%. Age 40+: 15–25% (own eggs). With donor eggs: 60–70% regardless of age. These are per-transfer rates — cumulative rates over multiple cycles are higher.
Is IVF painful?
The daily stimulation injections cause mild discomfort. Egg retrieval is done under sedation — you are asleep and feel nothing. Embryo transfer is painless and takes 5 minutes. After egg retrieval, mild bloating and cramping are common for 2–3 days. Overall, IVF is much less physically demanding than many people expect.
How many IVF cycles will I need in Hyderabad?
Most couples conceive within 2–3 IVF cycles. About 40–50% conceive on the first transfer. Cumulative success over 3 cycles approaches 70–80% for women under 35. Dr. Prashanthi reviews your protocol after each cycle and adjusts the approach for subsequent cycles.
What is the difference between IVF and ICSI?
In standard IVF, thousands of sperm are placed around the egg and one fertilises naturally. In ICSI, a single sperm is injected directly into the egg — used when sperm parameters are poor. At Mother Hospitals, ICSI is used in the majority of IVF cycles as it gives better fertilisation rates.
