Why Annual Wellness Checkups Matter for Women

Most serious women's health conditions โ€” cervical cancer, breast cancer, thyroid disease, diabetes โ€” are far more treatable when detected early. An annual wellness checkup gives you the best chance of catching problems before they become serious.

๐ŸŽ—๏ธ Cervical Cancer in India

India accounts for approximately 25% of the world's cervical cancer burden. It is the second most common cancer in Indian women. Cervical cancer is one of the most preventable cancers โ€” it can be detected at pre-cancer stage by a simple Pap smear and eliminated with HPV vaccination. Regular screening from age 25 is critical.

๐Ÿ”ฌ Breast Cancer Detection

Breast cancer detected at Stage 1 has a 5-year survival rate of over 95%. Detected at Stage 4, survival drops dramatically. Clinical breast examination as part of an annual wellness checkup โ€” combined with awareness of self-examination โ€” is the most accessible early detection tool available.

๐Ÿฉบ Silent Conditions

Thyroid disease affects approximately 1 in 10 Indian women โ€” and most don't know they have it. Vitamin D deficiency affects over 70% of urban Indian women. PCOS affects 1 in 5 women of reproductive age. All of these are easily detected on a simple blood panel and are very manageable when found early.

๐Ÿ’‰ Vaccination Catch-Up

Many women in their 20s and 30s have not received the HPV vaccine, which prevents up to 70โ€“90% of cervical cancers. A wellness checkup is the ideal opportunity to assess your vaccination status and complete any immunisations that were missed.

Wellness Checkup by Age Group

Different age groups need different emphases at their wellness checkup. Here is what Mother Hospitals recommends at each life stage.

Age Group Key Focus Essential Tests Frequency
Age 25โ€“34 Cervical screening, HPV vaccination, cycle health, fertility awareness Pap smear, HPV vaccine, AMH, TSH, Vitamin D, blood glucose Every 3 years (Pap smear); annually for overall checkup
Age 35โ€“44 Breast health, fertility planning, PCOS management, thyroid, weight Pap smear, breast exam, AMH, TSH, prolactin (if irregular cycles), lipids Annually
Age 45โ€“55 Perimenopause, bone health, breast screening, cardiovascular risk FSH/LH/Oestradiol, Pap smear, breast exam, blood pressure, lipids, Vitamin D, HbA1c Annually โ€” essential
Age 55+ Post-menopause health, bone density, cardiovascular, breast and cervical surveillance Pap smear (until age 65), breast exam, bone health, BP, lipids, glucose, Vitamin D Annually

Hormonal Health Screening

Hormones control almost everything in a woman's body โ€” energy, mood, weight, fertility, bone strength, and skin health. A simple blood panel can reveal hormonal imbalances that explain many symptoms women dismiss as 'normal'.

AMH (Ovarian Reserve)

AMH (Anti-Mรผllerian Hormone) is the most accurate single marker for ovarian reserve โ€” the number of eggs remaining in the ovaries. It is measured by a blood test at any point in the menstrual cycle. Recommended for all women aged 25โ€“40 as part of their wellness checkup.

A low AMH result does not mean you cannot conceive naturally โ€” but it does mean your window may be shorter than average, which is important to know for future family planning. For women planning pregnancy in the next few years, AMH is essential information.

Complete AMH Guide โ†’

AMH Ranges (Approximate)

AMH LevelInterpretation
>3.5 ng/mLHigh / PCOS pattern
1.0โ€“3.5 ng/mLNormal
0.5โ€“1.0 ng/mLLow-normal โ€” monitor
<0.5 ng/mLLow โ€” seek specialist advice

These are approximate ranges. Age-adjusted interpretation is important โ€” AMH naturally declines with age.

Thyroid (TSH, T3, T4)

Thyroid dysfunction is extremely common in women โ€” up to 1 in 8 women develop a thyroid problem during their lifetime. Hypothyroidism (underactive thyroid) causes fatigue, weight gain, hair loss, irregular periods, and difficulty conceiving. It is completely treatable with a daily tablet once diagnosed. TSH screening should be done annually for all women over 35, or if symptoms are present at any age.

Vitamin D Deficiency

Over 70% of urban Indian women have insufficient or deficient Vitamin D levels โ€” despite living in one of the sunniest countries in the world. Vitamin D deficiency causes fatigue, bone pain, low mood, reduced immunity, and impairs fertility. It is easily corrected with supplementation. Testing is simple and inexpensive.

Prolactin and Other Hormones (When Indicated)

Prolactin, LH, FSH, oestradiol, and androgens may be added to the blood panel based on your symptoms. Raised prolactin causes nipple discharge, irregular cycles, and infertility. Elevated androgens (testosterone, DHEAS) suggest PCOS or adrenal issues. Your doctor will advise which additional tests are appropriate at your wellness visit.

Cervical and Breast Screening

Cervical and breast screening are the two most important cancer prevention activities for women. Both are part of every wellness checkup at Mother Hospitals.

๐ŸŽ—๏ธ Cervical Screening (Pap Smear)

A Pap smear (also called cervical smear or cervical cytology) collects a small sample of cells from the cervix. These cells are examined for abnormalities or HPV infection that could lead to cervical cancer if untreated. The procedure takes about 5 minutes and may cause mild discomfort.

Start at age 21โ€“25 (or within 3 years of first sexual activity)
Every 3 years if normal result (standard Pap smear)
Every 5 years if combined with HPV co-testing
Abnormal result โ€” colposcopy referral for further evaluation

๐Ÿฉบ Breast Clinical Examination

A clinical breast examination by Dr. Prashanthi assesses for lumps, skin changes, nipple inversion, or discharge. It is a key part of every wellness visit. While mammography is not routinely offered at Mother Hospitals (referral provided where needed), clinical examination combined with monthly self-examination can detect the majority of breast changes early.

Annual clinical breast exam from age 25
Monthly breast self-examination taught during visit
Mammography referral if lump found or high-risk (family history)
Ultrasound referral for women under 40 with breast concerns

HPV Vaccination: The HPV vaccine protects against the strains of human papillomavirus responsible for 70โ€“90% of cervical cancers. Ideally given before sexual debut, but effective up to age 45. If you have not received it, your wellness checkup is the ideal time to discuss it. See our HPV Vaccine page for full details.

Wellness Checkup and Fertility Planning

If you are a woman aged 28โ€“38 who is planning a pregnancy in the next 1โ€“3 years, a wellness checkup is the perfect starting point. Understanding your baseline health before you start trying to conceive gives you the best chance of a smooth pregnancy.

What to Include for Pre-Pregnancy Planning

AMH test โ€” know your ovarian reserve before you start trying
Thyroid (TSH) โ€” untreated hypothyroidism significantly increases miscarriage risk
Rubella immunity โ€” essential to check before pregnancy; vaccinate if not immune
Vitamin D โ€” optimise levels before conception for better embryo quality
Blood group & Rh factor โ€” important for pregnancy management
Pelvic ultrasound โ€” check for fibroids, polyps, or ovarian cysts that may affect fertility
Folic acid advice โ€” start 3 months before trying to conceive

Why Pre-Pregnancy Planning Matters

Many women start taking folic acid when they find out they are pregnant โ€” but neural tube formation happens in the first 4 weeks, often before a pregnancy is confirmed. Starting folic acid at least 3 months before trying is critical.

Understanding your thyroid, vitamin D, and AMH status before trying gives your doctor the information needed to optimise your health for conception โ€” rather than discovering problems once a pregnancy has already occurred (or failed).

Frequently Asked Questions

How often should I have a women's health checkup?+

An annual wellness checkup is recommended for all women from age 25. A Pap smear specifically is recommended every 3 years if normal, or every 5 years if combined with HPV testing. If you have known health conditions (PCOS, thyroid disease, high blood pressure), your doctor may recommend more frequent monitoring of specific parameters.

Can I have the wellness checkup during my period?+

It depends on which tests are needed. Blood tests (TSH, AMH, Vitamin D, glucose) can be done at any time in your cycle. However, a Pap smear and gynaecological examination are best done when you are not menstruating โ€” ideally between Day 10 and Day 20 of your cycle โ€” for a clearer sample and more accurate result. If your period is unexpectedly timed, call us and we will advise whether to reschedule or proceed.

Does the wellness checkup include a Pap smear?+

Yes โ€” a Pap smear (cervical screening) is included in our standard wellness checkup for all sexually active women from age 25. If your most recent Pap smear was within the last 3 years and was normal, it may not need to be repeated โ€” your doctor will advise based on your last test date and result.

Is a pelvic ultrasound always needed?+

A pelvic ultrasound is part of our comprehensive wellness package and is highly recommended, but it is not mandatory for every visit. It checks the uterus and ovaries for fibroids, polyps, cysts, and signs of PCOS. If you have had a normal pelvic ultrasound recently, your doctor may advise it is not needed again at this visit unless you have new symptoms.

Do I need to fast before the wellness checkup?+

If fasting blood glucose is included in your package, you will need to fast for 8 hours before the blood test. Other tests (TSH, AMH, Vitamin D, Haemoglobin) do not require fasting. We generally recommend coming fasted to cover all blood test options, then having a meal in the clinic afterwards. Please confirm with our team when booking.

What age should I start regular health checkups?+

We recommend starting annual wellness checkups from age 25, or from when you become sexually active (whichever comes first, for the purpose of Pap smear). Women with a family history of cancer, early menopause, heart disease, or diabetes should start screening earlier โ€” often at age 21 or based on the age of onset in their family member minus 10 years.

Is AMH test part of the wellness package?+

AMH (Anti-Mรผllerian Hormone) is included in our comprehensive wellness package for women aged 25โ€“40. It is particularly recommended if you are planning a pregnancy in the future, have irregular cycles, or are concerned about your fertility. AMH can be tested at any point in the menstrual cycle โ€” no special timing needed.

Can I do this checkup if I'm on contraception?+

Yes, absolutely. Being on contraception (pill, implant, IUD, ring, injection) does not affect the vast majority of wellness checkup tests. Hormonal contraception can slightly suppress AMH levels, so your doctor will interpret AMH in that context. Your Pap smear, pelvic ultrasound, thyroid tests, and all other components can be performed normally. This is also a good opportunity to review your contraception and discuss whether it is still the right choice for you.
