What Is the AMH Test?

Understanding what AMH actually measures — and what it doesn't.

AMH stands for Anti-Müllerian Hormone — a protein produced by the small follicles (fluid-filled sacs) in your ovaries. Each follicle contains a potential egg, so the level of AMH in your blood directly reflects how many follicles — and therefore eggs — you still have. This is called your ovarian reserve.

Unlike FSH or oestradiol, AMH doesn't fluctuate during the menstrual cycle, which means it can be tested on any day — particularly useful for women with irregular periods. A single blood draw from the arm is all that's needed. No fasting. No injections. Results within 24–48 hours.

⚠️ What AMH does NOT tell you: AMH reflects egg quantity — not egg quality. A woman with low AMH can still have excellent quality eggs and conceive successfully. Egg quality is primarily determined by age, not AMH level. Do not make fertility decisions based on AMH alone.

Who Should Get an AMH Test?

Six situations where knowing your ovarian reserve can change your decisions.

👶

Trying to conceive for 6+ months

AMH is one of the first investigations when natural conception hasn't happened — it tells you whether time is urgent or there's more room for natural attempts.

🎂

Age 35 or older

Ovarian reserve declines sharply after 35. An AMH test at 35–38 gives you the information to decide whether to proceed now or consider egg freezing.

🔬

About to start IVF

AMH determines your IVF stimulation dose. Too high a dose in a PCOS patient causes OHSS; too low in a poor responder means fewer eggs retrieved.

🩺

Diagnosed with PCOS

PCOS typically shows very high AMH — confirming the polycystic pattern. Also helps predict OHSS risk before any treatment begins.

🥚

Considering egg freezing

AMH tells you how many eggs you're likely to retrieve per cycle — essential for deciding if egg freezing is worthwhile at your current reserve level.

🏥

After ovarian surgery or chemotherapy

Ovarian cystectomy (for endometrioma or fibroid), chemotherapy, and radiotherapy can damage ovarian reserve. AMH quantifies the impact.

AMH Normal Range by Age — Hyderabad

Interpret your result in the context of your age — not just against a single reference range.

Age GroupNormal AMHInterpretationStatus
Under 25 3.0 – 7.0 ng/mL Excellent ovarian reserve Excellent
25 – 30 2.5 – 6.0 ng/mL Good ovarian reserve Good
30 – 35 1.5 – 4.0 ng/mL Normal for age Normal
35 – 40 0.5 – 2.5 ng/mL Declining — act sooner Declining
Over 40 0.2 – 1.0 ng/mL Low — specialist assessment needed Low
Any age (PCOS) > 4.5 – 10+ ng/mL Elevated — polycystic pattern likely Elevated

Reference values may vary slightly between laboratories. Interpretation should always be in context of AFC (antral follicle count on ultrasound), age, and clinical history.

What Does Your AMH Result Mean?

Four result scenarios — and what each one means for your fertility options.

✅ Normal AMH (1.0–4.0 ng/mL)

Good ovarian reserve. Your ovaries are responding normally for your age. If you're not yet conceiving, the cause is likely elsewhere — tubal, uterine, male factor, or ovulatory. Standard IVF protocols will work well if needed.

🔺 High AMH (>4.5 ng/mL)

High AMH usually indicates PCOS — many small follicles producing excess AMH. Excellent egg numbers, but high OHSS risk in IVF. Very careful, low-dose stimulation protocols are required. Not a reason to celebrate without specialist guidance.

⚠️ Low AMH (0.5–1.0 ng/mL)

Diminished ovarian reserve — act sooner. Natural conception is still possible but less likely as time passes. IVF with a tailored minimal stimulation protocol gives the best chance of retrieving usable eggs. Don't delay investigation.

🔴 Very Low AMH (<0.5 ng/mL)

Poor ovarian reserve — specialist management needed immediately. Options include: Minimal Stimulation / Needleless IVF, natural cycle IVF, DuoStim (two retrieval cycles in one month), or donor egg IVF. Even at 0.3 ng/mL, pregnancies are possible with the right protocol.

If Your AMH Is Low — Your Options at Mother Hospitals

Dr. Prashanthi Reddy specialises in poor ovarian reserve. Low AMH is not the end of the road.

💉 Needleless / Minimal Stimulation IVF

Oral Letrozole + low-dose FSH protocol. Gentler on the ovaries, lower cost, suitable for women who respond poorly to high-dose drugs. Often produces better-quality eggs in poor responders than high-dose stimulation.

🌿 Natural Cycle IVF

Retrieve the one or two eggs the body naturally selects — often the best quality. No stimulation drugs. Repeated each month. Suitable for very low AMH (<0.3 ng/mL) where stimulation retrieves no additional eggs.

🔁 DuoStim (Double Stimulation)

Two stimulation rounds in one month — follicular phase then luteal phase. Doubles the number of eggs retrieved without waiting for a new cycle. Maximises embryo banking in poor responders.

💊 DHEA + CoQ10 Pre-Treatment

3–6 months of DHEA (25–75 mg/day) and CoQ10 (600 mg/day) supplementation before IVF may improve egg quality in poor responders. Discussed at consultation based on your hormonal profile.

🥚 Egg Freezing Now

If you're not ready for pregnancy but AMH is declining, freeze eggs now while reserve is still usable. Every six months of delay means fewer eggs. Early egg freezing protects your future options.

🤝 Donor Egg IVF

When AMH is extremely low and own-egg IVF has failed multiple times, donor egg IVF offers excellent success rates (50–60% per transfer, independent of recipient age). Discussed only after own-egg options are exhausted.

Frequently Asked Questions — AMH Test in Hyderabad

What is the AMH test and why is it done?

The AMH (Anti-Müllerian Hormone) test is a blood test that measures your ovarian reserve — the number of eggs remaining in your ovaries. It is the most reliable, cycle-independent marker of egg supply. It is used to: (1) assess fertility potential; (2) determine IVF stimulation dose; (3) diagnose or confirm PCOS; (4) identify premature ovarian insufficiency; (5) monitor ovarian reserve after surgery or chemotherapy.

What is the cost of AMH test in Hyderabad?

AMH tests cost between ₹800 and ₹1,500 at diagnostic labs and fertility centres in Hyderabad. Prices vary depending on the laboratory. At Mother Hospitals, the AMH test is done alongside a fertility consultation (₹1,500) so your result is immediately interpreted by Dr. Prashanthi Reddy — you don't leave with a number you don't understand. Call 97059 93366 to confirm current pricing.

Does AMH test require fasting or a specific day of cycle?

No fasting is required. This is one of the key advantages of AMH over FSH — FSH must be tested on day 2 or 3 of the menstrual cycle (day 1 = first day of bleeding). AMH can be drawn on any day, making it much more convenient for women with irregular cycles or those who cannot predict when their period will start.

What is a normal AMH level?

Normal AMH ranges by age: Under 25 years: 3.0–7.0 ng/mL · Age 25–30: 2.5–6.0 ng/mL · Age 30–35: 1.5–4.0 ng/mL · Age 35–40: 0.5–2.5 ng/mL · Over 40: 0.2–1.0 ng/mL. AMH below 1.0 ng/mL is considered low (diminished ovarian reserve). Above 4.5 ng/mL in reproductive age women suggests PCOS. Always interpret your result in context of your age and AFC scan.

My AMH is low — can I still have a baby?

Yes. Low AMH means fewer eggs — it does not mean no eggs, and it says nothing about egg quality. Dr. Prashanthi Reddy at Mother Hospitals has helped women with AMH as low as 0.3–0.5 ng/mL conceive through Minimal Stimulation IVF. The key factors are: acting promptly (every 6 months of delay reduces reserve further), choosing a specialist experienced in poor responders, and using a personalised protocol rather than standard high-dose stimulation. Book a consultation to discuss your specific numbers.

How long do AMH test results take in Hyderabad?

Most labs in Hyderabad provide AMH results within 24–48 hours. At Mother Hospitals, results are typically available same day or the next morning. During your follow-up (or at the same consultation), Dr. Prashanthi explains what your result means specifically for your fertility situation and outlines the next steps.

Can AMH be increased with supplements?

AMH reflects the biological egg count, which declines with age and cannot be significantly reversed. Supplements like DHEA, CoQ10, and Vitamin D may improve egg quality and slightly support follicle development in poor responders — but they do not raise AMH counts meaningfully. The practical response to low AMH is to act sooner and use the right IVF protocol — not to wait months hoping for improvement.

Is AMH test enough on its own to assess fertility?

AMH is one part of a complete fertility workup. A full evaluation also includes: AFC (antral follicle count on transvaginal ultrasound), FSH and oestradiol (day 2/3 hormones), LH, prolactin, TSH, and a semen analysis for the male partner. AMH alone tells you the egg quantity picture — the full picture requires all of the above. At Mother Hospitals, Dr. Prashanthi orders a personalised panel based on your history.

My AMH is very high — does that mean I am very fertile?

High AMH usually means PCOS — a large number of small, immature follicles. While this means more eggs for IVF retrieval, it does not mean better quality or better fertility outcomes. Very high AMH comes with significant OHSS (ovarian hyperstimulation) risk in IVF — ovaries can dangerously over-respond to stimulation drugs. High AMH PCOS patients require very careful, low-dose stimulation protocols. A consultation with Dr. Prashanthi is essential to understand your OHSS risk before starting any treatment.

Where is the best place to get AMH test in Hyderabad?

AMH tests are available at standalone diagnostic labs (Metropolis, SRL, Dr. Lal PathLabs) and fertility centres across Hyderabad. The advantage of getting tested at a fertility clinic — like Mother Hospitals, Boduppal — is that an IVF specialist interprets your result immediately and explains what to do next. You don't leave with just a number — you leave with a plan. Call 97059 93366 to book your AMH test alongside a consultation.
